Movement is no longer a necessary part of our day to day survival. The convenience of online shopping, remote work, processed foods, and the electronic devices glued to our hands mean we no longer have to hunt, run, or move for sustenance, livelihood, or safety anymore. We’re free to default to laziness and sedentarism. So where does movement fit in? Even if we don’t need to move for work or survival, our bodies still need to move if we want to thrive. But with movement no longer part of our daily lives, we now have to manufacture it and make a deliberate choice to get moving. There are so many incredible benefits of making time to move, from metabolic health to bone density to a stronger immune system, as well as the ability to take on challenges like hiking a mountain, swimming across a lake, or spending the day skiing with family and friends. Don’t let those opportunities slip away from you. Get outside and walk. Lift weights or your body weight. Embrace physical challenges.
